Uniquely our own, the Red Door Moving Program has been providing vital transitional support since 2005, helping over 100 families each year.
Many families who come to the Red Door have little or no possessions because they have fled situations of abuse or suffered significant financial hardship. But when they are ready to move out of the shelter, our Moving Program reduces their moving costs and provides much-needed furniture and household items at no cost. These gently used items have been donated to us as gifts-in-kind and provide a valuable, tangible way to help families who are transitioning out of the shelter.
Without the Program, families leaving the shelter would need to purchase beds, sofas, dressers, appliances, etc, as well as pay for private movers or store delivery fees. The cost of furnishing a new home, coupled with high private market rental fees, is a heavy financial burden that can put many families at risk.

Providing this service not only aids families financially, but it also helps to reduce their stress after living through a period of crisis. The average savings of over $1,800 per family goes a long way to easing both the stress and financial burden of starting again. The Moving Program has meant that families are able to use more of their savings for food, clothing and other necessities rather than on their move or on furniture. For many, it is the difference between moving into an empty apartment or moving into a place to call home.
Funding Needs
The continuation of our Moving Program is dependent upon fundraising dollars as much as it is upon donations of furniture. Red Door must pay the annual cost of storage, cover all of the moving truck expenses, and employ a driver and assistant mover. Red Door’s moving truck makes about 400 trips a year to distribute and deliver donated furniture and other items to our families when they move from the shelter.
Did you know? It costs $595 for us to move one family, but the donated furniture and items they receive saves them more than $1,800 in costs. That means for every $1 you give to the Moving Program, you're giving a family $3 in savings.
